Ella One Emergency Contraceptive Pill
Ella (Ulipristal) is used by women to prevent pregnancy after birth control failure (such as a broken condom) or unprotected sex. It is effective up to 5 days(120 hours). This medication is an emergency contraceptive and should not be used as a regular form of birth control.
- Using this medication will not stop an existing pregnancy or protect you or your partner against sexually transmitted diseases (such as HIV, gonorrhea, chlamydia).

Description
Ella contraceptive pill contains ulipristal acetate that has been show to delay/inhibit follicular rupture thereby suppressing/delaying ovulation and reducing chances of pregnancy. Ulipristal acetate is able to suppress ovulation even during an LH surge, unlike levonorgestrel and has been shown to be more effective in suppressing ovulation as compared to levonorgestrel. It is effective up to 120 hours (five days) after unprotected sex/birth failure control.
How to use: Take 1 tablet by mouth with or without food as directed by your doctor as soon as possible after unprotected sex. This medication works best when it is taken within 120 hours (5 days) after unprotected sex. Like all emergency contraception pills, it should be taken as soon as possible for highest efficacy.
Note:
- Drugs and herbal products that increase the activity certain liver enzymes that breakdown drugs may reduce blood levels of ulipristal and therefore its effectiveness. Speak to your pharmacist if you are taking other medications.
- After you take this medication, the time when your period comes and how much you bleed may change. Tell your doctor right away if your period is more than 7 days late. You may need to take a pregnancy test.
- Emergency contraception pills do not work in women who are already pregnant and should not be taken during pregnancy. Ulipristal passes into breast milk after oral administration and should not be used in breastfeeding mothers.
